At Bekare Transfers we know that during your vacations in the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula, you surely would like to know about interesting places to visit, and that is why our recommendation this time will be San Ildefonso Cathedral in Merida, Yucatan.
Built in the 16th century using the stones of the pyramids that were once sacred edification of the Maya city of T’hó, it took nearly 37 years to finish this Renaissance-style architectural monument.
Located in Calle 60, between Calle 61 and 63, Downtown Merida, facing the Plaza Grande, the Cathedral boasts many different emblematic and stunning carvings in stone, such as the Mexican coat of arms, an eagle that represents the first emperor of Mexico, Agustín de Iturbide. It also has an impressive clock made in London in 1731, as well as sculptures of St. Paul and St. Peter.
It once had five chapels, but nowadays it only has three: one dedicated to the Christ of Blisters, other to Santa Ana and the last one to the Baptistry. The other two were demolished several years ago and became the MACAY Museum. It is worth mentioning that the Christ of Blisters is known that way because during a looting that took place in the times of the Mexican Revolution, there was a fire, and after it was extinguished, the Christ had blisters on his body; this was consider as a miracle, thus he has been called that way since then.
The Cathedral has an incredible choir built specifically to preserve the first organ if had, which was made in Germany, but it was destroyed during the Revolution. Afterwards they replaced it with another organ, also manufactured in Germany. It also has a magnificent sculpture of Christ, called the Christ of the Unity, which is 8m high, made from birch and is mounted on a 12-meter high cross. It was carved by José Ramón Lapayese in the 20th century.
If you want to do something cultural, then this will definitively be the place you have to go to during your vacations and Bekare Transfers will make it possible. We are your best shuttle option to Merida!
