Every year, between May and October, visitors can enjoy one of the most amazing events created by nature. During the sea turtle nesting season four of the seven sea turtle species in the world visit the coasts of Quintana Roo, where Cancun and part of the Riviera Maya are located. In an effort to take care and contribute to the preservation of these magnificent creatures, several groups, organizations, hotels and locals gather as volunteers and collaborators installing special pens in some areas of Cancun Hotel Zone, Puerto Morelos and Akumal in the Riviera Maya, working together to monitor beaches, identifying and protecting female sea turtles spawning.
This year, the nesting season opened with the 71 leatherback turtle eggs, during the sighting of the first sea turtle of the season, a Dermochelys Coriacea (leatherback turtle) on the beaches of the KM 17 in Cancun Hotel Zone.
Nowadays, thanks to the efforts of many existing programs specialized in the care and protection of sea turtles like the “Protection and conservation program of sea turtles in the beaches of the municipality of Benito Juárez”, and the “Conservation program of sea turtles in Quintana Roo” and the “Marine turtle Research, Conservation and Protection Program” developed by the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA), the number of hatching eggs and sea turtle releasing has increased significantly, making possible for species like hawksbill, loggerhead and green sea turtles to be safe while they are spawning their eggs, and for the locals and tourists to involve and be more aware of the importance of the conservation of sea turtles in the world.
Riviera Maya theme parks such as Xcaret, Xel-ha and other important civil associations have been key to sensitize the residents of Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Tulum, about these amazing sea creatures and how to take care of them and their environment through many conscious actions that will impact our beaches and seas in a positive way.
Come to Cancun and the Riviera Maya and live an unforgettable moment along with your family while admiring and learning how these beautiful friends, sea turtles, visit us to let us behold the wonders of life.
