Habanero chile in the Yucatan Peninsula
The word “chile” in Mexico is a common one. Everyone knows what a chile is and what it tastes like whether they enjoy its flavor or not. Even abroad, everybody knows we Mexican love spicy food, sauces and chili in all its presentations.
One of the most famous chili peppers in Mexico is the “habanero”, a very spicy but let’s say noble chile that most people assure is not harmful to the stomach. This type of chili is considered as a delicacy in the Yucatan Peninsula and anybody who comes to Cancun will be able to corroborate that information.
Here in Cancun you will find it in sauces of all kinds and although it is not big in size, it is really one of the spiciest of all. People here consume it all the time and with all their meals, first because here in Mexico we think that if it is not even slightly spicy it has no flavor; for us, chile enhances the flavor of all meals. And next, because once you come here you get use to eating “habanero” chile and thus, as locals say, it is not that spicy anymore.
Habanero can be found in potato chips and other snacks, in oil-based sauces, in tomato based-sauces (less spicy), mixed with red onion and spices and so on… The point is that this chili is only for the brave ones, yes, those who are not afraid of almost anything. Try it if you dare and tell us how did that go?
Note: It is not that bad once you get use to eating chili.
