Papantla Flyers

These intrepid men will show you a new definition of the word “fly”. This tradition comes originally from Papantla, Veracruz, a state in the northern part of Mexico. It comes from the ancient Totonaca culture. The five men climb to the top of a 20m-high pole, one of them stays in the center of the pole playing a flute and a drum while the others, tied to a rope, start descending slowly while unrolling the rope. If you haven’t seen these incredible men trying to draw the fertility god’s attention by flying, just head to Parque Fundadores in Playa del Carmen.

Punta Esmeralda, Playa del Carmen

Enjoy the beach and a cenote

Have you heard about cenotes (sink holes)? They are natural ponds of fresh water, underground or open-air, which are connected to underwater rivers and caves. They were sacred places for the Maya people. Nowadays there are some in which you can swim or even dive. In Playa del Carmen you will find one that is particularly great for it is right on the beach, facing the Caribbean sea. That means you will be able to enjoy the best of both, the freshness of the cenote and the heat of the sun on the beach along with the beauty of the sea. This amazing spot is located in Punta Esmeralda, taking the road to the far north of the Fifth Avenue (La Quinta Avenida).
